Everyone loves a good story, young and old alike. They entertain, stir the imagination and perhaps even teach a lesson. Jesus was a master teacher. His stories are as meaningful for us today as they were during his ministry on earth.
For three out of the four Sundays in July, we have and will hear proclaimed Gospels from the thirteenth chapter of Matthew. Jesus captures the minds and hearts and sometimes raises the ire of his listeners through parables. A parable is a teaching method that Jesus used to help the listener understand about the Kingdom of Heaven. Each story begins with Jesus saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like….” Then Jesus goes on to compare the Kingdom with something familiar to the people like gardening, baking, finding a treasure, fishing and more. But then Jesus adds a twist to the story, challenging some and comforting others.
In listening to and reading the parables today, it is important that we are assured that no matter sickness, financial difficulties, all the injustice taking place throughout the world, the Kingdom of Heaven will, like the tiniest of seeds, flourish. Thank God! What part can you and I play in the building of God’s Kingdom here on earth?
