Seder means “Order of Service”
Each year in the springtime, Jewish families gather to celebrate their faith and remember the story of their exodus and deliverance from slavery in Egypt to freedom. This service, or ritual celebration, includes prayers, blessings, readings, hymns and the eating of ritual foods that signify the suffering, bondage and deliverance of God’s people.
As Christian families, we find our roots of Eucharistic celebration in the Seder meal. We celebrate this Seder to share a common ancestry with our Jewish brothers and sisters, and in memory of the meal that Jesus celebrated with His apostles. At that Passover meal Jesus took the ritual foods of bread and wine and identified Himself with them. He offered Himself as the true Passover lamb, slain in sacrifice to free us and give us newness of life. He gave us Eucharist – both a ritual meal and a real presence – to remember, to celebrate and to believe.
