After years of repeating it, the fact of God becoming incarnate as a child and being born in a stable can lose some of its significance. The fact of Christmas is shocking and full of meaning for us today. Our expectation of a God who is all-powerful and all-knowing would be that when He appears, it would be with great fanfare and extravagance. Instead of a palace fit for the King of Kings, God chooses a simple stable.
For us, this means that God desires to make His love present in every part of our lives, especially the lowest and most humble areas. Nothing is off-limits for God’s love. Jesus Christ took on humility and lowliness to meet us especially in those places of our hearts. Advent is a time of watching for signs of His love everywhere in our lives and hopefully, we will notice His love present in unlikely places.
This week as we light the second Advent candle, we meditate on love, the love that God brought into the world in the stable in Bethlehem and desires to bring into our hearts. Take some time this week to ask God to help you to see the ways He is pouring out His love in your life. This prayer and the humble disposition that comes with it makes a highway for our God to move within us.
