We hope you got your free copy of “Resisting Happiness” at Christmas Masses. If not, we do have some extra copies in the Parish Office. We also hope that you’ve had time to read it or at least browse through it. Matthew Kelly always says, “Your life will change when your habits change.” With this book we can substitute attitude for habits. When our attitudes change our life will change.
“Resisting Happiness” can help us change our attitudes to choose happiness and to stop the negative tapes from running in our heads that sabotage our happiness. It is about the things we do, the things we tell ourselves, the ideas and the negative attitudes that keep us from recognizing how we are God’s gift to the world. We don’t need money, power, fame or pleasure to be happy. We find happiness by being the best people we can be and by living authentically in God.
Abraham Lincoln said, “Most people are usually about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Most of us are relatively happy, but we also know that we can be happier. What are those habits, thoughts or attitudes that keep you from being happy, that keep you from being the person God calls you to be, or having the strong loving relationship you crave?
Over the next six weeks, we will be offering summaries with reflections, insights, questions and ideas for reflection on five chapters of Resisting Happiness. The chapters are short but full of insight and practical tips. Let’s decide to get this book off the shelf and use it to break some of those habits we all have that keep us from finding and living the happiness we all seek and to clear our minds and hearts of the negative clutter that keeps us from being the happy and joy-filled people God calls us to be.
